Maybe you've gotten into the same trap that I sometimes do --
You fill your to-do list up with a bunch of really hard, really challenging stuff.
And then you look at and promptly freak out.
This, of course, can be paralyzing and generate procrastination.
Yuck, right?
Well, momentum almost always helps. And momentum is generated by doing things are both easy and valuable.
Often we'll leave easy off the list of things to do, because it's easy, right?
But every time I add things like "clean boots" to my to-do list and do them, I get a huge momentum boost.
You basically can't fail at cleaning a pair of leather boots. If you put in 10 minutes, you're going to go from a decent pair of boots to a really very nice looking pair of boots.
It's satisfying, and easy to go into a zenlike flow state doing it.
These kinds of activities that let you flow downhill into harder stuff easily enough.
Try it. Ideally the action you write down is both guaranteed of success, and legitimately somewhat valuable. All sorts of cleaning and maintenance of high value items does this (cleaning up your computer, deleting old files, cleaning the exterior and monitor as well as other technology, and whatever your highest ending clothing and accessories are). If the backlog isn't too big, processing receipts and getting your accounting in order can easily be this. "Easy to make" calls to people you really enjoy, with an easy and enjoyable agenda -- yup, that's it again. Follow up with slightly harder calls for the downhill momentum effect.
Try it out. Sprinkle some easy guaranteed wins into your to-do list. Every time I forget to do this, I feel it. Every time I remember to do this, everything else gets a little bit easier. Give it a roll -- nothing to lose and a lot to gain. A whole lot, actually.
