You ever "hit the wall"?
I don't mean, "hit the wall hard", I mean just standard "hitting the wall"...
Yeah, sure, of course you have. Everyone does.
(Unless this is an American English expression only... "hitting the wall" means a certain kind of fatigue kicks in when you've been working a lot, and immediately your work quality starts to suffer and nothing gets done)
Anyways, one of the more interesting things about time tracking is sometimes I make a note about what I'm doing or feeling between tracking. An observation: I almost never do good work after hitting the wall.
Day's been awesome. Up at 5:30AM, worked 12 hours today. Also got in some exercise, and did some reading at a nice little French bakery. I wish the day wouldn't end. But I've hit the wall. I was about to try to power through and keep working, and then I realize - who am I kidding? Every time I try to do that, nothing gets done and the quality is terrible anyways.
This doesn't mean just feeling inertia. That's something else. You can power through inertia.
No, The Wall is different. It's like you've been massively kicking ass, but then you hit the wall. Suck. Alright, time for food, or a nap, or to go to bed and wake up in the morning. The Wall has arrived. I acquiesce! I'm going to bed now. Morning will come soon enough.
I used to not respect The Wall. I'm learning to. Bedtime for me.
It's funny when you write a draft of a post, don't finish it, and see you did the opposite course - yesterday I did 10 hours of work, then met a friend for two hours, and I tried to do a bit more before sleeping - but only got 20 minutes of work done in the next 3 hours. Today I thought about just going to bed really early, didn't, and got very little work done in the last five hours of the day... so, note to self - respect the wall.
