Jerky replied to my "Newest Daily Time/Habit/Life Tracking." It was really, really sharp - I thought it deserved its own post.
Make WAR on procrastination: Hmmmm, I’m not sure if that’s the best way to visualize it. For years I was trying to fight my weaknesses with this attitude, saying ‘fuck this’, I’m just gonna beat that with my will and be stronger. With close to zero results. It was just like my subconciousness just kept doing all these unpleasant things (procrastination, sleeping too long etc.) out of spite because of my aggressive attitude. Only when I changed to a more gentle approach, when I started working TOGETHER with myself instead against me, I started improving. Because procrastination is a part of yourself and I don’t think that being at war with yourself is ever a good thing. I’d rather collaborate with myself, in a constant dialogue, always examining the roots of the evils and working on them. In a positive way.
Unity, yes. I'll say - my early results with externalizing procrastination and fighting it have been good, but after I'm settled in I'll tweak my notes/tracking to see if that works better. This was a great comment man, thanks for sharing that. Let me know if you'd like some more public credit, if you have a site you'd like to share with us, etc. This was awesome - thanks much for the feedback.
Anyone else have experiences along these lines? Externally fighting it, working harmoniously, either way? All input is welcome, I'd love to hear other perspectives on this.
Edit: Ask and ye shall receive. Just got a very good comment from Travis Deyle -
I tend to subscribe to Structured Procrastination a la Stanford Prof. John Perry. Some of my best work has materialized when I should have been working on something else. Personally, I prefer to acknowledge my procrastination tendencies, weight them appropriately, and just make consistent progress on something.
Yes, I firmly recommend that essay. Great point there Travis, about acknowledging, weighing, and consistent progress. Very good stuff, thank you for sharing that.
